Prebivalci lahko veliko za svojo požarno varnost naredijo sami, če so o ukrepih pravočasno poučeni. Zato smo gasilci PGD Trebnje aktivni tudi na področju ozaveščanja občanov o nevarnostih požara, začetnemu gašenju, evakuaciji uporabnikov stavb in ostalih preventivnih aktivnostih (raznos letakov s preventivno vsebino, objave na spletni strani, FB …).

Statistični podatki navajajo, da:

nastane okoli 60 % požarov v domačem okolju,
je okoli 70 % smrtnih žrtev zaradi požarov v domačem okolju in
¼ požarov v domačem okolju nastane med 22. in 6. uro.

Ogljikov oksid se v krvi veže na hemoglobin veliko bolje kot kisik. To povzroča ogljikov hemoglobin, ki zavira transport kisika do tkiv. Ogljikov oksid postaja namreč za odraslega človeka toksičen pri vrednostih, višjih od 50 ppm (ali 0,005 vol %). Vrednosti, katerim je človek izpostavljen nekaj ur in znašajo med 50 in 150 ppm, lahko povzročajo glavobol. Koncentracije CO, ki presegajo 400 ppm, pa so običajno za odraslega človeka smrtne.

Dimniški požar je posledica tvorjenja katranskih oblog v dimovodni napravi, ki se vnamejo. Katranske obloge nastanejo zaradi neustreznih pogojev za zgorevanje goriva (npr. neustrezen dovod zraka), slabe kvalitete goriva (npr. vlažen les), neustreznega načina kurjenja (npr. pripiranje zraka, neustrezno nalaganje) ali neustrezno dimenzionirane dimovodne naprave (sanacije so danes nujnost).

Vsako kurišče v naravi mora biti urejeno tako, da se gorenje ne more razširiti.
Kurišče mora biti:

obdano z negorljivim materialom;
območje v oddaljenosti vsaj meter od zunanjega roba očiščeno vseh gorljivih snovi;

Ves čas kurjenja mora biti nadzorovano s strani polnoletne osebe;
Po končanem kurjenju se mora ogenj popolnoma pogasiti.

Informacije o večjih požarih so v javnosti vedno zelo odmevne. To velja še posebej za požare, kjer nastane večja materialna škoda. Med te vrste požarov pogosto spadajo tudi požari, do katerih je prišlo v industriji in jih povzročijo vroča dela, kot so varjenje, brušenje ipd. Takšne požare bi preprečili z učinkovitim izvajanjem požarnih straž ter ostalih varnostnih ukrepov za preprečevanje nastanka požara.

Oktober je v Republiki Sloveniji mesec, ki je posvečen požarni varnosti. Vsako leto ima svojo osrednjo temo, ki jo v sodelovanju pripravijo in izvajajo Uprava RS za zaščito in reševanje, Gasilska zveza Slovenije in Slovensko združenje za požarno varstvo.
